<head>Biographical Note</head>
<p>In the 1860 census, brothers Charles W. (b. 1824) and Joseph F. (b. 1828) Hodges resided in the same house along with Charles' wife Mary and their year-old son Charles Jr. The two brothers claimed a personal estate worth $3500, divided evenly. In 1870, Joseph had become Foxboro's Postmaster with real and personal estates valued at $4500. He had married and had a year-old son. Charles' household had grown to seven, with children ranging from 2 to 11. His property was valued at $6000.

<head>Scope and Contents of the Collection</head>
<p>These two account books are presumed to be the customer ledgers of the Hodges and Messinger grocery store in Foxboro, Massachusetts, based on the list of customers and their proximity to the store in the 1876 county atlas, and the list of Foxboro grocers in the 1867 Massachusetts Register. The store was soon to become the Union Store of Charles W. and Joseph F. Hodges.
