      <bioghist id="bioghist">
         <head>Biographical Note</head>
         <p>John L. Teall was born on October 8, 1926, in New Haven, Connecticut.  He served in the U.S. Army from 1944-1946 in the Philippines and Japan.  He received a B.A. in 1948 and an M.A. in 1950, both from Yale University.  From 1950-1951 he studied in Paris.  He then became an instructor in the history department at Swarthmore College until 1953, when he married Elizabeth Salmon.  In 1955 he became an instructor at Mount Holyoke College.  He received his Ph.D. from Yale in 1956, and became a full professor in 1968.  He published numerous books and articles and was a well-known lecturer.  He died on May 6, 1979.</p>

         <head>Scope and Contents of the Collection</head>
         <p>The John L. Teall Papers are made up of correspondence, 1954-1979; course records, 1951-1979; subject files, 1955-1979; writings, 1955-1979; research notes, 1955-1979; legal documents, 1961-1968; biographical material, 1954-1980; and photographs, 1955-1979.  The correspondence concerns his teaching duties at Mount Holyoke College, his research and other professional activities.  The course records include materials for courses taught at Amherst College, Swarthmore College, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Mount Holyoke College and Wellesley College.  The subject files primarily pertain to research.  The writings include published and unpublished works, drafts and notes.  The research notes concern the agricultural system of the Byzantine Empire.  The legal documents consist of publication agreements and a building proposal.  The biographical material includes autobiographical and biographical sketches and newspaper clippings.</p>
