Ann Hartman (1926- ) earned her B.A. from Wellesley in 1947, a Masters in Social Work from Smith College in 1954, and a doctorate in Doctorate in Social Work from Columbia University in 1972. She worked as a caseworker, 1950-58, in New York and Ohio. She was a Professor of Social Work at University of Michigan, 1974-86, and at Fordham University 1969-74. Hartman specialized in child welfare and family service. She co-founded the Ann Arbor Center for Family, 1976, and was faculty director of the National Child Welfare Training Center at the University of Michigan, 1979-85. Hartman was Dean and Professor at the Smith School for Social Work, 1986-94. She was also editor of the journal, Social Work for 5 years in the 1990s, and secretary of the National Association of Social Workers. She lives with her partner of 29 years, Smith faculty member Joan Laird. Ann Hartman received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council on Social Work Education in 1994.
