    <head>Biographical Note</head>
       <p>Born Ann Arbor, Michigan, 1897. A.B. Smith College, 1919; M.A. Mt. Holyoke
College, 1925; Ph.D. Yale, 1937.  Married Donald Ross Green.  Taught history at the
University of Chicago, and Mt. Holyoke and Smith Colleges.  Authored the two-volume
<title render="italic">Washington:  A History of the Capital, 1800-1950</title> (1962-63), for which she received the Pulitzer Prize for history.  Other books include:  <title render="italic">American Cities in the Growth of the Nation</title> (1965); <title render="italic">Eli Whitney and the Birth of American Technology</title> (1956);  <title render="italic">The Rise of Urban America</title> (1965); <title render="italic"> The Secret City:  A History of Race Relations in the Nations Capital</title> (1967).</p>
