         <abstract encodinganalog="520$a" label="Abstract:">Grant family.  Elijah Grant and Elizabeth Phelps Grant, 1784-1866, and eight children.  Papers consist of letters to Martha Grant, 1824-1847, compositions and journal.  Primarily documenting the health of Martha, attended Mount Holyoke Female Seminary, 1842-1844 and activities of the family including mission work, education, and activities of her siblings, Joel, 1816-1873, John, 1822-1878, and Mary Zilpah Grant Burgess, 1811-1842, and in-laws, Susan Boyd Grant, b. 1815 and Abigail Fidelia Cowles Grant, 1820-1881, attended Mount Holyoke Female Seminary, 1843-1845.  Papers also include the correspondence of Abigail Grant to Martha Grant.  Primarily describing academic and residential life at Mount Holyoke and her marriage to Joel Grant.   </abstract>

      <bioghist id="bioghist">
         <head>Biographical Note</head>
         <p>Elizabeth Phelps and Elijah Grant, brother of Zilpah Grant Banister, married on November 11, 1807.  Their first son Elijah was born in Norfolk, Connecticut on August 3, 1808.  He graduated from Yale in 1830 and married Susan Boyd on September 7, 1836.  Their first daughter, Mary Zilpah, was born on August 18, 1811.  She attended Ipswich Female Seminary and married Reverend Ebenezer Burgess in 1839.  They worked as missionaries in India.  Elizabeth Grant was the third child, born in 1813.  Joel Grant was the second son, born on January 24, 1816.  He graduated from Yale in 1938 and married Abigail Fidelia Cowles, who attended Mount Holyoke (x1846), in 1845.  Daniel Grant was born on June 19, 1818.  Abigail Grant was born on June 5, 1820 and died on July 25, 1835.  John Grant was born on August 29, 1822 and graduated from Yale in 1845.  Martha Grant was born on July 13, 1824 and attended Mount Holyoke from 1842-1844.  She died on September 21, 1847.  James Marcus Grant was born on January 10, 1827.</p>

         <head>Scope and Contents of the Collection</head>
         <p>Chiefly letters to Martha Grant from family members and friends discussing her ill health and their activities.  Includes letters from Joel Grant concerning his studies at Andover Theological Seminary, 1843, and Yale, 1843-1845, and his subsequent work as a minister in Lockport, Ill.; letters from John Grant describing his studies at Yale, 1842-1845; compositions by Martha Grant written as a student at Mount Holyoke Female Seminary, 1842-1843; and a journal by Mary (Grant) Burgess, 1839-1840, describing the journey to India with her missionary husband, Ebenezer Burgess, and their life in Ahmadnagar. Correspondants also include Mary Ambler, Lorinda Bedortha, Mary S. Grove, Abigail Grant, Elizabeth Grant, Susan Grant and members of the Woodward family.</p>
