Historical Note

In 1865, Bishop Thaddeus Amat requested the Vincentians serve as administrators of a
new college and seminary planned for Los Angeles. The cornerstone for the first St.
Vincent's College building was laid in 1866. For the first two decades both lay and
seminary students were accepted, but by 1886 the seminary program had disappeared
from the curriculum. Difficult relations with the Archdiocese characterize the
period of the 1870s and 1880s which resulted in the Vincentians purchasing a new
piece of property in order to build a church as well as a college. In 1901, Rev.
Joseph Glass, C.M. was appointed superior of the college. During his administration
he drove the school into a financial crisis. Vincentian historians have suggested
that his recommendation to ask the Jesuits to take over was primarily to cover up
his financial mismanagement of the institution. The Jesuits agreed to the proposal
but dropped the college program opting instead to support a high school curriculum
only. The Jesuits took over in September 1911 and the school was formally renamed
Loyola College in 1918. St. Vincent's College had a very loyal alumni and this group
continued to meet yearly through the 1960s and celebrate the memories of their days
at St. Vincent's College.

Description of the Collection

The Records of St. Vincent's College, Los Angeles, California fill eleven boxes,
spanning the dates 1869 to 1964 with the bulk of the material dating from 1869 to
1911. The files were created, collected, and/or maintained by the Vincentian priests
who served as administrators of the college. This collection contains materials that
document the establishment, development, and closing of the college. Also included
are materials documenting the St. Vincent's College Reunion Committee.
