<bioghist encodinganalog="545"><head>History of the Dayton Christian Jewish Dialogue</head><p>The Dayton Christian Jewish Dialogue has its roots in the 1965 Vatican II document <title render="italic">Nostra Aetate</title>, which encouraged the Church to examine its relationship with Judaism. Inspired by this, a Marianist priest named Father Philip Hoelle organized a regional workshop in 1972 for the south-central Ohio region at the Bergamo Center in Dayton, Ohio to discuss Catholic-Jewish relations. Over seventy participants attended this first workshop, which led to the official establishment of the Dayton Christian Jewish Dialogue.</p><p>In November 1973, the group hosted the first National Christian-Jewish Workshop, featuring Father Edward Flannery as a speaker. The event was so successful that national workshops have been held on a biannual basis in cities around the nation. The Dayton Christian Jewish Dialogue has served as a model for interreligious dialogue groups around the nation.</p><p>The Dayton Christian Jewish Dialogue held regular meetings, with time spent on socialization, organization business, and education. Each meeting had a topic of discussion, including books, films, and invited speakers. The Dayton Christian Jewish Dialogue has also sponsored public events in the Dayton community. Members came from diverse religious backgrounds, and included both clergy members and laypeople. The group met on a monthly basis for many years, and continues to meet intermittently today.</p><bioghist><p></p></bioghist></bioghist><scopecontent encodinganalog="520$a"><head>Scope and Content</head><p>This collection contains papers related to the Dayton Christian Jewish Dialogue that were saved by Father Philip Hoelle, S.M. They are not a complete set of the organization's records. The first series contains copies of the DCJD's minutes from 1991 through 2003. These copies do not represent a complete set of the DCJD's minutes, but a majority of the minutes from these years are present. These minutes are arranged chronologically.</p><p>The second series contains papers related to workshops and events hosted by the Dayton Christian Jewish Dialogue. Within the series, these events are arranged chronologically. The first folder contains papers relating to the 1972 workshop that was the first meeting of the organization, and includes a copy of the facilities contract, invitations to attend the meeting, a copy of the agenda, a list of attendants, financial documents, participant evaluation surveys, and summary reports of the event. Folder 2 contains papers relating to Father Edward Flannery's 1973 visit to the University of Dayton, which was sponsored by the DCJD. This folder contains a brochure, correspondence planning the event, and a press release. Folder 3 contains a schedule and summary report of a Jewish-Christian Dialogue Convocation held at United Theological Seminary in 1973. Folder 4 contains papers related to the first National Workshop on Catholic-Jewish Relations, held at the Bergamo Retreat Center in Dayton in 1973. It includes registration information, a copy of the prayer service held at the workshop, the workshop's program, and a summary report. Folder 5 contains papers on a 1976 program sponsored by DCJD on the topic of "Religious Freedom--200 Years Later," including registration information, the program, and correspondence. Folder 6 contains papers relating to the 1983 dedication of the Dayton Jewish Community Memorial to the Holocaust Victims, including invitations and correspondence. Folder 7 contains a program and prayer service materials for the 1989 retreat for the DCJD.</p><p>The third series contains other materials printed by the Dayton Christian Jewish Dialogue. The first folder contains announcements mailed to group members between 1977 and 2002. The second folder contains materials distributed at meetings between 1972 and 1978. Folder 3 contains materials distributed at meetings between 1980 and 1989, and folder 4 contains materials distributed at meetings between 1993 and 2003. The fifth folder contains undated meeting materials. Folder 6 contains correspondence related to the DCJD, mostly incoming correspondence received by Father Hoelle. The seventh folder contains reflections on the Dayton Christian Jewish Dialogue, written by Father John J. Kelley, S.M., Father Bert Buby, S.M., and laywoman Eileen Moorman.</p><p>The final series contains materials printed by groups of related interest to the Dayton Christian Jewish Dialogue; these materials were collected by Father Hoelle alongside his papers from the DCJD. They have been arranged by source, and arranged chronologically within each folder. Of particular note is the collection of papers relating to the Sanders Program in Judaic Studies, a collaborative program sponsored by the University of Dayton, the United Theological Seminary, and Wright State University.</p><scopecontent><p></p></scopecontent></scopecontent><arrangement encodinganalog="351$b"><head>Statement of Arrangement</head><p>Papers in this collection have been arranged by material type, with the first series containing Dayton Christian Jewish Dialogue minutes, the second containing papers related to their workshops and events, the third containing meeting materials, and the fourth containing materials from related organizations. The materials within the first three series are arranged chronologically, and materials in the fourth series are arranged first by the type of organization, and then chronologically within each folder.</p></arrangement><accessrestrict encodinganalog="506"><head>Restrictions on Access</head><p>This collection is open and available to the public for research in the U.S. Catholic Special Collections reading room.
