<abstract encodinganalog="520$a" label="Abstract:">Rev. Thomas Bouquillon was born at Warenton, Belgium on May 16, 1842. He studied philosophy and theology at Roulers and Bruges. In 1865 he was ordained in Rome. Two years later, Bouquillon received his doctorate in theology from the Gregorian University. In that same year he was appointed Professor of Moral Theology in the Seminary of Bruges. Bouquillon was appointed to the Catholic University of Lille, France in 1877 and remained there for the next decade. He came to The Catholic University of America as one of the original faculty members. From 1889 until 1902, the year of his death, he served as Professor of Moral Theology. The collection contains biographical information, general correspondence, miscellaneous lectures and notes, newspaper clippings, and miscellaneous publications.</abstract>

<bioghist altrender="biography" encodinganalog="545" id="a2">
	<head>Biographical Note</head>
	<p>Rev. Thomas Bouquillon was born at Warenton, Belgium on May 16, 1842. He studied philosophy and theology at Roulers and Bruges. In 1865 he was ordained in Rome. Two years later, Bouquillon received his doctorate in Theology from the Gregorian University. In that same year he was appointed Professor of Moral Theology in the Seminary of Bruges. Bouquillon was appointed to the Catholic University of Lille, France in 1877 and remained there for the next decade. He came to The Catholic University of America as one of the original faculty members. From 1889 until his death in 1902, he served as Professor of Moral Theology. During his academic career, Bouquillon published nearly fifty articles and pamphlets. Among his publications are: Theologia Moralis Fundamentalis, De Virtutibus Theologicis, and De Virtute Religionis (2 volumes). He had completed but not published the following: De Justitia et Jure, De Eucharistia, and De Poenitentia. In addition he edited the De Magnitudine Ecclesiae Romanae of Thomas Stapleton. </p>

	<head>Scope and Contents</head>
	<p>The collection has been arranged into five series. The first, consisting of biographical information, has copies of a 'In Memoriam' offprint from the January 1903 edition of The Catholic University Bulletin and copies of the 1902 death notice issued by Catholic University rector Thomas J. Conaty.</p> 

<p>The second series consists of general correspondence, dated 1864-1904, with some undated material. The majority of it is written in French with those in English concentrated in the later years.</p>

<p>The third series are two bound volumes and one folder of miscellaneous lectures and notes, with some material dated 1878-1879, 1892 and the rest undated, mainly in French or Latin with newspaper clippings, miscellaneous correspondence, and additional notes inserted throughout the volumes. </p>

<p>The fourth series is made up of three bound volumes of newspaper clippings, dated 1892-1900, related to the question of Catholic education in the United States, the State and Catholic Education, Individual rights to Educate, To Whom does Education belong?</p>

<p>The fifth and last series consists of miscellaneous publications, dated 1892-1904. </p>
